It was a little funny to read about FHA appraisers that missed glaring problems. They must have fixed the issue within the next 15 years. My VA appraiser nearly kept me from buying a house because of chipped paint on a decorative railing. Because she was too "busy" to come out and verify the repair, I was a day away from losing my lock on my mortgage rate. It would have been a percent higher and priced me out be able to afford the house. 25 years later, I had to spend several thousand dollars to repair a house that I wanted to sell "as is" to satisfy the FHA appraiser. BTW Merkin was based on Adlai Jr, the presidential also ran, not the III.

Yeah, FHA clearly has no problem boomeranging all the way to the other end of the problem spectrum. It was very much an issue of the time, coming up far more than I can include it. Re Merkin: Thank you, of course it was Jr--I can't believe I made that mistake. Will correct that. Thank SO much for pointing it out.

Should mention that I am really enjoy these posts and the book in progress. I was thirteen at the time and it is interesting to see stories after all these years and have a semi-adult take on them now. We were a Daily News family and I delivered the Tribune and the Pointer. I grew up about two miles south of Steve on Wabash and don't think I ever got a Gately's donut, but loved the popcorn.

Also enjoyed the interview with Rick Kogan, it will be interesting to find out who Mrs. Grobnik is in real life. Fine job of writing, I could have sworn you were Slats Jr.

Thank you! Subscriptions are free so motivating words are that much more valuable. The Pointer--I almost forgot about it, because the South End Reporter and Calumet Index were bigger in Roseland. But of course, and then there was the smaller local versions of the Economist too. Although I didn't cover the smaller locals in it, don't miss the chapter on 1972 major papers in the Notes section.
