I was going to guess Bob Greene, but then remembered that was Bexley.

Wow! I’ll give you a hint: that answer is incredibly ironic given who the correct answer is. Sorry for the bad grammar. Thanks for guessing!

Only fair to dispense the actual answer: He doesn't mention it much, but it's the immortal Neil Steinberg.

Never was a Sun Times guy, would read Roeper at times because he was a Dolton guy of my age. Never would have gotten that correct, sure I read some of his work, but don't recall him. Thanks for the answer, I'd run out of guesses to google. As far as Bag Boy Greene is concerned, it cracks me up when I see his missives in the WSJ. And never apologize for poor grammar, my English major father ashes create a dust devil whenever I type.

I had no idea Bob Greene had resurfaced in the Wall Street Journal. But Neil Steinberg (still of the Sun-Times) also used to write the hilarious Bob Watch column for the Reader--"We read Bob, so you don't have to" under the name "Ed Gold." If this item covered the correct years in the '90s, I'd be including Bob Watch as much as possible.

Wow, I'd pick up The Reader on my way to the Metra Electric (IC to the old school) and read Bob Watch all the time, it was great. Bagtime was in his early days at the Sun Times I believe. My boss at the marina read it all the time. This would have been the late 70's and early 80's. The zany adventures of a Treasure Island bag boy.
