Minor mistake Cate, those "granaries" across from Wrigley Field were actually the coal silos of the Sahara Coal Company. You can even read the name on the fence in the photo you used. The Milwaukee Road delivered the coal to them via the Seminary Avenue branch, it also delivered coal to Lill Coal up to about 1971 or 72, when it closed. The CTA picked up the coal cars along the east side of Graceland Cemetery & then dropped them at Lill at Berwyn & Broadway. Now it's a Jewel. Sahara was replaced by a Henry's Drive-In for many years, until the Cubs bought it & illegally occupied the then abandoned Milwaukee Road right-of-way for years, until they somehow fixed that mess maybe 15 years ago.
As for Mabley & the chair, he always insisted he quit because of the chair & the paper gave it to him when he went to the American. Maybe you can find Burt Constable, as he worked for Mabley at the Daily Herald for years & ask him what he was told about that incident.
Thank you Garry! This lazy Sox fan did not look closely enough at that Wrigley photo. I'll go update now and give you credit. Thank you for mentioning Burt Constable, because I absolutely do want to do a post on Jack Mabley and he's obviously a go-to source.
